LMRFC Youth and Mini Rugby Up and Running for the New Season
Saturday 7th September saw the start of the Lytchett Minster RFC youth rugby season. After a well-deserved summer break all of the age groups had been itching to get going for the new season. After a successful registration weekend last week when a lot of the age groups got back together and rekindled friendships and camaraderie the U13s got the season up and running with a friendly/training match as a curtain raiser to the Andy McMinn Memorial game against their counterparts from Swanage and Wareham.
The memorial match is new to the fixture calendar and started last season, played annually now at the start of each season hosted alternatively by S&W RFC and Lytchett Minster for a great stalwart of both clubs.
The matches drew a large crowd to Watery Lane and both U13 teams certainly enjoyed themselves playing good running rugby in front great enthusiastic support, so much so that they have asked to continue to be the curtain raiser for this match through to them completing their colts rugby in years to come.
The senior match which followed was also played in exceptional spirit in the memory of Andy, with ages of the players ranging from 18 through to those in their early 60s, drawn from a variety of local clubs who just wanted to remember their former team mate and opposition.
The day was rounded off with plenty of food, refreshments, a raffle and auction, all squeezed in before we unleashed the band who took us through to the early evening. All had a wonderful day/evening and the money raised will be donated to Andy’s favourite charities.
This was then followed on Sunday with a full session of minis and youth training with all squads from U6 to U15 taking part and to round the weekend off the Lytchett colts opened their new league campaign with a loss away to Weymouth who unfortunately were the much stronger side on the day. This week sees them take on Bridport RFC at home on Sunday at 1400 and the team would welcome any support on the side-lines in their quest for the first win of the season.
If anyone is looking to get involved in rugby Lytchett is a family friendly club, offering rugby for all age groups from U6 through to seniors and we are always looking forward to meeting new players of any age and ability to join the family.
