Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs Overton on 10 Jan 2004

Loss of ConcentrationLose Lytchett the Match

Lytchett Minster travelled to Overton at the weekend knowing a win would pull them clear of the relegation dog fight. However, a 10 minute loss of concentration would cost them dear.

Overton started the match strongly and scored after just ten minutes, when some attacking forward play found a gap to exploit and the Overton winger went in at the corner. This score seemed to galvanise the Lytchett team and they replied straight away with a score of their own with stand-off Tom Dilon side stepping his way to the line. Both of the opening tries were not converted.

The game was tight, with both sides playing strong attacking rugby. But from nowhere Lytchett took their foot off the gas and allowed Overton to run in two further tries in quick succession. Lytchett replied with a penalty from the boot of Dilon, but were behind at half time 15 - 8.

The second half was a different affair, with Lytchett camped in their opponents half for long periods. From an attacking penalty second row Vince Ward crashed through two tackles to score a deserved try. The conversion was missed, but Lytchett were back in the match, only trailing 15 - 13 with 20 minutes to go. All the pressure was Lytchett's and with minutes to go the minster men found themselves 2 feet from the Overton try line with 5 men standing out wide waiting for the ball to be recycled. But some naïve play saw the ball driven toward the line, instead of being passed wide for the simple score and the chance went begging. The match was bought to a close with Lytchett still on the attack, but the score line was not good reading for the battling Lytchett side having lost 15 - 13. The win puts Overton on equal points with Lytchett, so it's going to be an interesting second half on the season for both teams.
